What Is a Comprehensive Oral Exam (COE)?
If this is your first visit (and not an emergency appointment), we’ll typically begin with a Comprehensive Oral Exam, or COE. This in-depth evaluation goes beyond a routine check-up to give us a full understanding of your oral and overall dental health.
Experience has shown that starting with a COE allows us to identify your unique needs and develop a personalized plan for lasting oral health.
Your COE will include:
A review of your medical and dental history
A full-mouth series of digital X-rays and photos
A detailed assessment of your head, neck, jaw, soft tissues, teeth, and gums
Screening for gum disease, decay, bite, and alignment issues

After reviewing your records and X-rays, your dentist will walk you through their findings, showing you the images and explaining your current oral health, any areas of concern, and recommended next steps.
